Lieberman kills another health care reform compromise

In 2000 campaigning with Gore, Joe Lieberman was for allowing people 55+ to buy in to Medicare. Three years ago campaigning for the Senate he was for it. He also spoke favorably of a public option. Three MONTHS ago he spoke favorably of that campaign stance.

Now no matter what the CBO says about the cost, Lieberman is against it. It's now being reported that the Democrats have come out of a long meeting with the Medicare buy in gone. This was supposed to be the compromise when the Democrats gave up on the public option because of Lieberman and a couple other Senators. Instead Lieberman killed it too.

Seriously, screw this guy. He's a hypocrite of the highest order, an embarrassment to the Senate and the people who voted for him because he lied off his ass to them. Even the party created for him after he lost in the Democratic primary in '06, Connecticut for Joe Lieberman, is now against him. Seriously. Follow the link. It starts with these words: "The Connecticut for Lieberman Party (CFL) rejects the fraud perpetrated on the members of this party and the citizens of Connecticut by Joe Lieberman". No, I don't know why they haven't changed their party name.

It's all possible because the Senate is broken. The filibuster is standard practice now and that's a recent development. Not so long ago it was rarely used. Now any bill must have 60 votes to get through the Senate. It makes the Senate an inherently conservative body and gives far too much power to backstabbing attention whores like Joe Lieberman. It allows the minority to thwart the will of the majority. It is quite simply a gross abuse of the legislative process.

More hypocrisy: In 1995 Lieberman co-sponsored a bill to get rid of the filibuster. He said the filibuster was wrong, created gridlock, and led to a tyranny of the minority. Yep, that's Senator Lieberman, serial hypocrite and liar.

Forget the supposedly filibuster proof 60 votes Democrats wanted. It's long past time to strip Lieberman of his committee chairmanships and tell him to get the hell out. What use is having someone in your party caucus if you can't even get their procedural vote on your most important legislation?
